Details about the Grimm Variations anime were first announced in July 2021 following a partnership between CLAMP and Netflix formed in 2020. The original anime is based on the Grimm’s Fairy Tales, a German collection of fairy tales written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, also known as “Brothers Grimm”. It was first published on 20 December 1812. The original edition had 86 stories, and by the seventh edition, published in 1857, there were 210 distinct fairy tales.
Netflix describes the original anime as:
Inspired by the classic Brothers Grimm stories, this anthology features six fairy tales with a dark twist, exposing the shadowy side of human desire.
