Haikyu Announces Special Anime for Fukurodani VS Mujinazaka Quarterfinal Match

The Haikyu anime franchise announced a new special anime, Haikyu: Where Monsters Go, which will cover the the quarterfinal match between Fukurodani Academy and Mujinazaka High. The two will meet in the Spring High National Tournament, where Karasuno will face Kamomedai in another quarterfinal match.

Fukurodani VS Mujinazaka: The Quarterfinal

The special anime will focus on the match between two of the tournament’s strongest teams:

  • Fukurodani Academy, led by the “hey hey hey” ace spiker Bokuto Kotaro.
  • Mujinazaka High, featuring Kiryu Wakatsu, one of Japan’s top high school players.

Both teams feature powerful lineups and experienced players, making this an interesting match-up in the national tournament. The title Where Monsters Go (Haikyuu Bakemono-tachi no Iku Tokoro) corresponds to Chapter 336 of the Haikyu manga, where the match begins. It ends in the following chapter, which means that the special anime is most likely to be a single episode.

Haikyu the Movie: VS The Little Giant

In addition to the newly announced special anime, the franchise also confirmed the production of Haikyu the Movie: VS The Little Giant, the second part of the Haikyu FINAL film series. This movie will depict Karasuno High’s fourth-round match at the Spring High National Tournament against Kamomedai High, focusing on the long-awaited showdown between Shoyo Hinata and Korai Hoshiumi, both known as “The Little Giant.” The first teaser trailer and visual were revealed today.

Background

Haruichi Furudate is the creator of the original Haikyu manga (stylized as Haikyuu!!), which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2020. The series concluded with a total of 405 chapters, collected into 45 volumes. The manga is licensed by Viz Media in English.

The anime adaptation, produced by Production I.G., began airing in 2014. The second season followed in Fall 2015 through Winter 2016, while Season 3 aired in Fall 2016, covering Karasuno’s match against Shiratorizawa. Season 4, titled Haikyu: To the Top, was released in two cours, airing in Winter 2020 and Fall 2020.

Besides the anime, the franchise also has multiple OVAs, spin-offs, stage plays, and video games. The first movie, Haikyu: The Dumpster Battle, debuted in theaters early last year before becoming available for streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll starting October 31, 2024.
