Hololive Stops Accepting Gifts Addressed to Talents by End of August 2021

Hololive Production tweeted Monday that it will stop accepting gifts addressed to its talents, considering the possible invasion of privacy using loss-prevention tags

On August 2, 2021, Hololive Production posted an important announcement on Twitter. It says that it will stop accepting gifts addressed to its talents by the end of August 2021. This is a result of discussions between the talents and internal parties who took into account the impact of privacy invasion caused by “loss-prevention tags.”

Likewise, Hololive also clarified that they will still accept fan letters.

What are Loss-Prevention Tags?

Retailers use loss-prevention tags to track items and prevent shoplifting or theft. It also helps track deliveries remotely using custom-built or pre-made tracking systems. Loss-prevention tags for consumer use already exist, helping people find their keys or other devices using Bluetooth technology.

Additionally, the launch of key finders from known tech brands Samsung and Apple made it much more possible for consumers to take advantage of the technology. The Washington Post shows how Apple’s AirTags can be a tool to stalk people.

Why is this important for all Virtual YouTubers?

Incidents of stalking and doxxing have made rounds in the news before. It’s not just Virtual YouTubers who are prone to these incidents, but all content creators and public personalities in general. Also in Japan, a stalker found an idol’s location just by looking at the reflection in her eyes.

It’s likely possible that enhanced wireless loss-prevention tags can be used to track the location of anyone at a distance. As soon as the perpetrator finds out the address, they have the option to stalk and harass their target online.

Previously, Hololive has dealt with the harassment case brought by one of its talents, Yozora Mel. Hololive’s management company Cover Corporation has set up measures to prevent such incidents from happening again.
