JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death Movie - An Enjoyable Yet Bittersweet Advance Screening in Manila, Philippines

JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie has officially landed in the Philippines and is now available to watch in cinemas nationwide. Ahead of its premiere date of September 3, Anime Corner was invited to join in on the exclusive advance screening at SM Megamall, Mandaluyong, Philippines.

While a lot of people were doubtful about what to expect from the movie, I was admittedly happy to just see this story arc (and my husbando, Gojo) on the big screen. After joining the advance screening, however, I realized that the movie has taken on a shape of its own, which invites its audience to a powerful standalone film, rather than a collection of episodes.

Simply put, yes, the movie is a recap, but that isn’t to say that fans of the series don’t have a reason to be excited for it. The story may not be new, but it is now wonderfully re-edited in a way that the pacing and emotional narrative hits differently, just as a feature film format does. The plot is terribly heart-wrenching from start to finish, but the movie flows smoothly through the “episodes” with the most amazing visuals, soundtrack, and a cherished bond between the characters that, even if they don’t last, still delivers some comfort and entertainment.

What to Expect From this Movie?

The JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie is a compilation of the events from the Hidden Inventory / Premature Death Arc from the first five episodes of Season 2. It’s a separate arc from the main story that rewinds to the year 2006 in the youthful days of the prodigal students Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, who later became the strongest jujutsu sorcerer and the most vicious curse user, respectively. The movie delves into their friendship, morals, and beliefs, exploring how the challenges in the jujutsu society ultimately lead them to follow separate paths.

So what’s there to look forward to? First off, the theatrical experience. Seeing the anime on the big screen is an immersive experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else. Visually, it felt awesome to see my favorite characters (Gojo and Geto’s visuals being absolutely iconic!) on screen and see the animation movements in full. For the sounds, experiencing them in a more professional quality was great. I particularly enjoyed the fight scenes and the piano piece, “If I Am Here With You.” The same goes for listening to the talented voice actors.

Second, the movie’s editing transformation was surprisingly impressive. I can’t say for sure which exact parts they were, but I know that I was left with the impression that the film was strong enough as a standalone movie. It maintains an equal and satisfying focus on every character development and plot point, despite the movie packing five episodes together. So whether you’re a veteran JJK fan or a newbie, the JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie is a good point in the franchise to jump into.

Lastly, the addition of the Juju Stroll and original illustrations in the epilogue was a memorable and impactful piece to the movie. The Juju Stroll served as a lighthearted, wholesome, and funny slice-of-life moment. On the other hand, the slideshow epilogue, accompanied by the acoustic version of Tatsuya Kitani’s “Ao no Sumika (Where Our Blue Is), is a lovely yet bittersweet bonus that delivered that final blow of nostalgia (or as I call it, pain and suffering) to wrap up the movie. Here, we quietly celebrate the happy memories of youth, reminiscing about a time before everything changed forever.

If you’re a JJK fan, you absolutely cannont miss out on this! It’s best to enjoy it with family, friends, and fellow fans/sorcerers. Tickets are available to purchase at the SM Cinema website and physical booths, while the list of other participating cinemas can be found on the official Medialink Films PH Facebook page. As of writing, the fan screening on September 6th at SM Megamall is sold out.
