Cygames’s success with the Umamusume: Pretty Derby franchise is something most companies wish they could achieve. In less than five years, the franchise grew from a mobile racing game to a global juggernaut. To put that in otaku terms, if Umamusume were a Pokémon, it would be a Magikarp. No one expected much from it. Yet, it turned into a behemoth. The love for Umamusume is so widespread that characters from the franchise appear on an 80th anniversary illustration for Indonesia’s state-owned rail operator, Kereta Api Indonesia.
The Gazega-drawn illustration features the beloved daughter types Umas, Rice Shower, and Haru Urara. Kereta Api Indonesia celebrated its 80th anniversary on September 28.
Cygames launched the Umamusume: Pretty Derby mobile game in 2021. Players assume the role of the in-game trainer who guides umamusumes during their racing career. UMPD quickly became one of the most downloaded games in Japan. Its commercial success yielded billions of yen for Cygames. Following its 2025 global release, the franchise became a viral hit. The game has greatly renewed international interest in horse racing.
The Umamusume: Pretty Derby franchise now boasts several manga, anime, OVAs, a movie, a stage play, and many video games. Additionally, Cygames has cemented the game’s presence by partnering with the Kentucky Derby and the Paris Grand Prix.
Umamusume: Cinderella Gray is the latest anime addition to the franchise. The anime focuses on the exploits of Oguri Cap. Its second cour is currently airing on Amazon Prime and the It’s Anime YouTube channel. Netflix also streams the anime in select Asian territories.
