This adaptation is based on the light novel Let This Grieving Soul Retire! Woe is the Weakling Who Leads the Strongest Party (Nageki no Bourei wa Intai Shitai: Saijiyaku Hanta ni Yoru Saikyou Party Ikusei Jutsu), written by Tsukikage and illustrated by Chyko. The series also has a manga version illustrated by Rei Hebino. J-Novel Club licenses the light novel series in English, while Yen Press licensed the manga.
The story follows Krai Andrey, one of six childhood friends who once vowed to become treasure hunters and ended up becoming the world’s strongest heroes. But on his very first quest, Krai realized he was not suited for the job. Despite this, his friends still choose him as their leader. Now, underpowered and overwhelmed by high expectations, Krai begins a reluctant journey filled with adventure, stress, and a strong desire to retire as soon as possible.
