The live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters per Second released its first official teaser trailer, along with an October 10, 2025 premiere date in Japan. Toho is handling the distribution.
The new 30-second teaser features the tagline “Always somewhere, searching for the feeling of those days”. Yuto Ueda and Noa Shirayama have joined the cast as the child versions of the main characters, Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara, respectively.
Both young actors were chosen from a pool of approximately 500 applicants following a competitive audition process. To prepare, the production team had workshops and rehearsals over two months prior to filming.
Previously announced cast and staff include Hokuto Matsumura (SixTONES) as adult Takaki Tono and Yoshiyuki Okuyama as director. The film is being produced by Spoon, with Masaru Yokoyama composing the music. Yokoyama is also arranging a new version of “A Distant Day’s Reminiscence,” the original theme song composed by Tenmon for the 2007 anime.
The live-action adaptation was first announced in September 2024. At the time, the original creator Makoto Shinkai called it a product of a young and passionate team led by Okuyama. Shinkai described the original film as “immature and unfinished,” saying that it captured impulses from an earlier stage in his career that he could not reproduce today.
Director Okuyama, coincidentally the same age as Shinkai was when directing the original, commented on his role. “There are things that can only be made now and perspectives that we will eventually forget. I want to carefully and sincerely craft each scene and every second, together with the team I trust wholeheartedly, as if placing a warm hand on Takaki’s back, who carries a sense of loss and anxiety.”
Matsumura also commented on the responsibility of bringing the popular work to a new medium: “Since this is a work I’ve watched countless times myself, I feel the weight of responsibility every day. Every fan has their own interpretation and world of the story, and I am one of them.”
Originally released in 2007 by CoMix Wave, 5 Centimeters per Second follows Takaki Tono through different periods of his life as he navigates his relationships and emotions. The animated film won Best Animated Feature Film at the 2007 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and it has also received novel and manga adaptations.
