The movie premiered in Japan in June of this year and it had an exclusive world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. A preview was also shown during this year’s Anime Expo.

The theme song for the Look Back adaptation is “Light song” by haruka nakamura and urara (vocals). Mizuki Yoshida and Yumi Kawai are voicing the main duo, Kyomoto and Fujino. The Look Back movie received positive reviews, including high praise by Hideo Kojima.

Look Back was nominated for Eisner’s Award in 2023. VIZ Media published it in English. The manga is also available to read on Manga PLUS. The title is inspired by the Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back In Anger” song.

The Look Back anime adapts the one-shot, first published in 2021 on the Shonen Jump+ platform. It follows the story of two high school students, Fujino and Kyomoto, who bond over a shared love for art after a teacher suggests they work together. As time passes, the two become very close but life has different plans for them.

GKIDS describes the plot of Look Back:
Popular, outgoing Fujino is celebrated by her classmates for her funny comics in the class newspaper. One day, her teacher asks her to share the space with Kyomoto, a truant recluse whose beautiful artwork sparks a competitive fervor in Fujino. What starts as jealousy transforms when Fujino realizes their shared passion for drawing.
Based on the acclaimed manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of “Chainsaw Man”, Look Back captures the highs and lows of pursuing artistic excellence and the special bonds formed through creative collaboration. The heart-wrenching story is the stunning feature-length directorial debut from Kiyotaka Oshiyama that will leave you in tears and inspire you to chase your own artistic dreams.
