Makoto Yukimura Says Vinland Saga Only Has "A Few More Chapters" Remaining

We had the opportunity to sit down in conversation with Vinland Saga creator Makoto Yukimura, who told us that he has only a few chapters left to write for the story. We spoke with him during this year’s Kodansha House manga pop-up, and Yukimura-sensei also noted that he has no idea how the story is going to end. When asked about the ending, Yukimura-sensei said:

As of now, October [18] 2024, I only have a few more chapters to write for the story of Vinland Saga. I came this far just the way I planned, but honestly from this point and beyond I have no idea what’s going to happen. Honestly, I don’t know how this is going to pan out at the end. I’m going to do my best, though.

The author previously revealed that the final chapters of Vinland Saga weren’t that far away via a tweet in April of 2024.

In addition, he also said that it has all gone according to his initial plan for the manga during its almost 20-year run since 2005. Check out the full Makoto Yukimura interview for our entire discussion.

Vinland Saga was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2005 before moving to Monthly Afternoon, going on to have its chapters collected into 28 volumes as of the time of publication. Kodansha USA licensed the manga in English and has published translated volumes through Volume 13.

The series has a TV anime adaptation of two 24-episode seasons. Season 1 was animated by WIT Studio, while MAPPA took over for Season 2. The same key staff worked on both, including:

  • Director: Shuhei Yabuta
  • Series Composition: Seko Hiroshi
  • Character Design/Chief Animation Director: Takahiko Abiru
  • Music: Yutaka Yamada

Both of anime series’ two seasons are available to watch on Netflix and Crunchyroll, with the latter describing the series as:
Around the end of the millennium, Viking, the mightiest but atrocious tribe, had been out breaking everywhere. Thorfinn, the son of the greatest warrior, lived his childhood in the battlefield. He was seeking the land of reverie called Vinland. This is the story of a true warrior in an age of turmoil.
