My Deer Friend Nokotan released preview images for episode 1. Poised to be the comedy hit that took fourth place in our Summer 2024 Most Anticipated Anime Rankings, we begin our journey toward that most important question, a question so deep, so profound that should we ever find the answer, life as we know it would change: “Why are humans not deer?”
Animated by WIT Studio and produced by Twin Engine, the gag humor show My Deer Friend Nokotan is like a clear mountain lake: just because you can see the bottom, doesn’t mean you can touch it. See the preview images below:
While you can run from your past, you can’t run from its repercussions. Torako Koshi tries to hide that in a prior life, she was a no-good delinquent, so she presents herself as the perfect student at her new school. However, as she walks home one day, she sees a mysterious girl hanging by her antlers from the wires, just staring…menacingly. As that mysterious antlered girl shows up in class the following day, Torako’s perfectly manufactured life begins to crumble.
“Why are humans not deer?” It seems like a whimsical question, but is that all it is? Is it just a gag like Return to Monkey? Or evolve to crab? Or, is it something much deeper, is it the ruminations of a tortured mangaka riddled with existential dread, realizing that by the day, we’re rapidly losing touch with the natural world? Is it the question of a soul that’s desperately searching for a more primal, meaningful way of life?
Anime has always broached taboo and uncomfortable topics head-on without the slightest hesitation, and often times it comes up with a response at the end. So, how lucky are we that the biggest conundrum of life has finally been tackled, and with a show animated by Wit Studio nonetheless?

After a July 3 preview in Japan, the show will premiere globally on July 7 on ADN, Amazon Prime, Anime Onegai (in glorious Español), and Crunchyroll. Masahiko Ohta is directing, Ayumu Tsujimura is the character designer, and Takashi Aoshima is in charge of the script and composition, with music by Yasuhiro Misawa. The cast of My Deer Friend Nokotan includes:
