My Hero Academia released its final volume today in Japan, and the creator Kohei Horikoshi said that he is already working on a new manga. The comment came after a collaboration with Marvel was shared, where he drew an illustration featuring Spider-Man and Marvel’s illustrators drew Black Cat with some of My Hero Academia’s strongest female heroes.
The new manga is currently in the planning phase, with him focusing on the upcoming My Hero Academia events. In addition, new illustrations were drawn for the morning newspapers:
- Yomiuri Shimbun: Izuku Midoriya
- Asahi Shimbun: Katsuki Bakugo
- Mainichi Shimbun: Shoto Todoroki
Horikoshi-sensei said that he is planning to start the new manga as soon as he possibly can and that he is currently working on the storyboards. He added that he was thinking about just drawing it and letting someone else write the story, but his editor advised him to do it all himself again. You can find his full comment below.
Kohei Horikoshi: “I feel really lucky over the success of My Hero Academia, so I know there’s a lot of pressure around my next move. I’m planning to start a new manga as soon as I possibly can.
I was thinking to committing myself to simply drawing my next project, and letting someone else write the story, but my editor advised me ‘It will be better if you do it all yourself.’ With that in mind, I’ve slowly started writing and drawing the storyboards my next manga. However, there are still several events left surrounding MHA, so for a while I’ll still be committed to supporting and promoting it.”
Kohei Horikoshi drew the My Hero Academia manga for Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from July 2014 until August of this year. The series ended after a 10-year run, getting numerous illustrations and messages for the conclusion. Volume 42 was the final one, and it released on December 4, 2024.
The manga received its first anime adaptation by studio BONES in 2016. It received 6 more seasons in the following years, with Season 7 concluding on October 12, 2024. You can read our review of the finale, as well as one of the entire season.
My Hero Academia Season 8 was officially announced immediately after the last episode, and it was confirmed to be the final one. The fourth movie, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, premiered in Japan in August, with international screenings following soon after. The movie will include an anime adaptation of the A PIECE OF CAKE original manga story as a bonus for its Blu-ray and DVD edition, which will release in Japan on February 19, 2025. The original story was written by Kohei Horikoshi.
