One Piece Episode 1070 - Setup for Peak as Joyboy Returns

Episode 1070 of ONE PIECE was released on Sunday, and it setup for the highly anticipated episode of “Luffy’s Peak” on August 6. The episode began with the disappointed Kaido, who had just ended his fight with Luffy after CP0 interrupted Luffy in the final moment. Just like with Oden, he had genuinely been enjoying the fight and wanted it conclude properly. As Luffy deflates, we see the CP0 agent has already accepted his fate and has no words while waiting for sure death by Kaido. The Yonko wastes no time and quickly lets out his rage on the man.

After this, the enraged Kaido heads down to clean up. He announces Luffy’s death, and we see the disappointment and sadness from the people present. Nami is the one who decides to deny his claims, yelling at the Yonko that he’s a lying snake and that there is no way Luffy would die. We get an emotional moment from the Straw Hat Pirates’ navigator, though it almost ends tragically when Kaido actually notices her. Rather than having some plan, it seems she had just decided to irritate Kaido, who sends a Blast Breath her way. Luckily Marco was there, and he saves her just in time.

There seemed to be some moments where the characters’ mouths didn’t match their voices, and Kaido’s CGI seemed awkward at times. He continued to wreak havoc on the samurai, telling them they have to bring Momonosuke to announce their surrended. We also saw Kid and Law having to fight again, though they’re already beat up and it’s clear they’d be done if Kaido came their way.

Meanwhile, Yamato and Momonosuke are also discussing their course of action following Luffy’s defeat. Momo thinks that they should surrender as they have no chance against Kaido. However, Yamato won’t let him and she is ready to die fighting. She reminds him of the people who died and says that he must be heavily wounded as well. It was kind of sad seeing Momo being ready to give up, though also understandable considering his mind is still that of a child and he is terrified of Kaido. Still, Yamato inviting him to die together was powerful, and he’ll probably realize that’s the only real option as well.

The final part of the episode is what we’ve all been waiting for. Nami repeats her words that Luffy wouldn’t die again, even screaming at him to live up to his words. We see and hear Luffy regain a heartbeat, and we also get to see Zunesha’s reaction. The large elephant calls out to Momonosuke, saying it can hear the Drums of Liberation after 800 years and that “he” is back. As an epic triumphant soundtrack begins playing, Luffy slowly begins to seemingly white smoke. When a confused Momo asks Zunesha what the hell it means, the elephant replies that Joyboy has returned.

We’ve already seen the Gear 5 trailer and know what is coming, but the scene was still chilling and made a great set up for the next episode. There will also be a new ending theme song for the anime for the first time in almost 17 years starting with the episode.
