Yu Shimizu writes the Otherworldly Munchkin: Let’s Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP (Isekai Manchikin: HP 1 no Mama de Saikyo Saisoku Danjon Koryakuand) manga series, which is illustrated by Makoto Aogiri. It has been serialized on Kodansha’s Suiyobi no Sirius manga service since February 2019, with 10 published volumes. The creators left comments on the anime adaptation:
Yu Shimizu: “I’m Yu Shimizu, the writer of the original Isekai Munchkin story. Congratulations on the anime adaptation!! This work is packed with all the fun memories of playing TRPGs during my school days. May the god of dice bless Yukito’s adventure and bring great success to the anime!”
Makoto Aogiri: “I’ve always dreamed of Isekai Munchkin becoming an anime. When my editor contacted me to say ‘the anime adaptation has been decided,’ I was so shocked that I kept saying, ‘Really?!’ repeatedly. I still remember that day vividly! (laughs) Just imagining how the scenes I drew in the manga will come to life as Yukito and his friends move, talk, and progress in their journey makes me so excited! There will be a lot of new information announced, and I look forward to enjoying this journey with all of you!”
The director of the Otherworldly Munchkin: Let’s Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP anime adaptation also commented:
“I’m Mamoru Yokota, the director of Munchkin. When I first heard about Munchkin, I thought, ‘Wait, the first project after establishing the studio, and I’m the director?’ Due to physical reasons, I told the CEO, ‘I’ll need transportation to the studio,’ so a white-haired old man comes to pick me up in a van every day.
Reading the script with Shimizu-sensei and Aogiri-sensei, and holding meetings with the staff—my life in isekai projects has begun.
With the thought of making a lasting impact in the time I have left, I’m giving my all to Munchkin! To everyone around the world! Of course, I’ll also be working with the charming female characters, so stay tuned and wait patiently!”
Kodansha USA licensed the manga in English. The story follows 16-year-old Yukito Kirihara as he gets killed trying to protect his younger sister Sana from an ogre that appears randomly. He then gets reincarnated into another world, where his goal is to find Sana and save her, even if he only has 1hp.
