The first Spice and Wolf anime was animated by studio Imagin and aired in the Winter 2008 anime season through 12 episodes. It received an OVA episode in May of the same year. A second OVA was released in May 2009, and a second 12-episode season by studios Marvy Jack and Brain’s Base aired in the summer of that year.

Spice and Wolf is based on a Japanese light novel series written by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Jyuu Ayakura. ASCII Media Works published it from 2006 to 2019. The light novel had a total of 22 volumes. A manga adaptation by Keito Koume ran from September 2007 to December 2017. A sequel novel titled Wolf and Parchment written by Hasekura and illustrated by Hidori is ongoing. Yen Press licensed both the original series and the sequel.

Crunchyroll will stream Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf as part of their Spring 2024 anime line-up, and they describe the story:
Lawrence is a traveling merchant selling various goods from a horse-drawn cart. One day, he arrives at a village and meets a beautiful girl with the ears and tail of an animal! Her name is Holo the Wisewolf and she brings bountiful harvests. She wishes to return to her homeland, and Lawrence offers to take her. Now, the once-lonely merchant and the once-lonely wisewolf begin their journey north.
