Suicide Squad ISEKAI - Crazy Fun Premiere

Suicide Squad ISEKAI made its premiere today with the first 3 episodes, and it delivered an entertaining take on isekai mixed with well known characters from the DC universe. As I don’t know much about the characters beyond their existence, I can’t comment much on how they got adapted from their comic version. I will mainly speak as an anime watcher coming into it with very limited background information. With that said, here is a quick look at some of the key reasons I think the show is worth at least trying.

An interesting isekai story

The Suicide Squad we follow consists of Harley Quinn, Clayface, Peacemaker, King Shark and Deadshot. We get a short introduction for Harley, which includes The Joker (who will hopefully come back into the story in the future), after which we get a look at how exactly the ISEKAI part of the title will come into play. Amanda Waller has managed to open a portal to another world, and she decided to send these super-villains on a mission to establish some dominance and secure resources for Earth.

The fact that these are modern time characters makes for plenty of fun comments. My favorite character so far has been Clayface, who compares the new world to Alice in Wonderland before dropping the isekai word itself as a more modern term. The other world has magic, fantastical creatures and the typical isekai world, and it was fun watching the DC characters get used to it as they try to survive. Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara (Re:ZERO, Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-) are writing the script for Suicide Squad ISEKAI, and there’s no doubt we’re in for a treat of a story.

Great animation

As for the animation, it might be enough to just say WIT Studio is in charge of it. While there were some particular scenes animated in styles I’m personally not a fan of, the animation looked stellar to me as a casual all throughout the first three episodes and featured plenty of pretty fights. From Joker’s wild piano car maneuvers to King Shark just devouring characters in cold blood, I thoroughly enjoyed the visual aspect of the content. I particularly felt like Harley Quinn got a lot of love for her own fight scenes, which makes sense considering she’s pretty much the face of this title.

Strong voice cast

I find the voice cast phenomenal, and their performances have justified the expectations so far. A big reason Clayface is my favorite might be the fact that he is voiced by Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch in Code Geass). The rest of the main cast includes Anna Nagase (Ushio Kofune in Summer Time Rendering) as Harley Quinn, Takehito Koyasu (Dio in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) as Peacemaker, Subaru Kimura (Aoi Todo in JUJUTSU KAISEN), and Reigo Yamaguchi as Deadshot, which is his first major role.

A particularly fun voice acting fact is that Cecil, the former hero who is now losing hair out of stress, is voiced by Jun Fukushima (Kazuma in Konosuba). His voice is easily recognizable to Konosuba fans, but it feels kind of funny to hear him being all serious in another isekai after just finishing the third season of Konosuba. The scene with Rick Flag accidentally pissing Cecil off due to his orc-learned foul language genuinely made me laugh out loud.

No idea where it will go

Besides the main cast, we realize that there is another Suicide Squad that’s been in the other world for a while. Katana and Ratcatcher are both there, and we have no idea who the others are (though I’m pretty sure Killer Croc and Enchantress were shown). Harley has a grudge against Katana already since she was the one who caught her in the first place, and it’s interesting to think about the relationships the two squads might have with each other.

Will they also end up teaming up with the Empire or will they work with the Queen? Why does the princess look like Harley Quinn and will that eventually be a plot point? Will Joker storm into the other world, and will that lead some big name DC characters into the story as well? I am very interested in the way things will develop, and I look forward to watching Suicide Squad ISEKAI weekly.

The Suicide Squad ISEKAI anime is streaming on Max and Hulu in the United States. The official synopsis:
Amanda Waller, the head of A.R.G.U.S., has assembled a group of notorious criminals for a mission: Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, and King Shark. These DC Super-Villains are sent into an otherworldly realm that’s connected to this world through a gate. It’s a world of swords and magic where orcs rampage and dragons rule the skies—an “ISEKAI!”

Harley Quinn and the others go berserk after arriving in the ISEKAI but are captured by the Kingdom’s soldiers and sent to prison. They only have 72 hours before the bombs implanted in their necks explode. The clock is ticking. After negotiations with Queen Aldora, their liberation is contingent upon the conquest of her enemies, the hostile Imperial army. The Squad members have no choice but to throw themselves head-first into the battle’s frontline.

If they run, they die. If they lose, they die. With their lives on the line, can Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad survive in the ISEKAI? Brace yourselves for the pulse-pounding saga of the elite task force known as the “Suicide Squad” as they embark on a jaw-dropping adventure! Let the party begin!
