The official Twitter account for Netflix dedicated to anime revealed that an anime set in the Terminator universe will be coming to the platform. It’s a team up between Netflix and Skydance, the company that holds the rights to the sci-fi franchise. Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote the upcoming DC movie The Batman as well as Project Power, will be the showrunner and executive producer. In addition, Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, Psycho Pass, Eden of the East) will be handling the production.
The president and CEO of Production IG, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, also gave a comment, and it roughly translates to: “I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning the ‘Terminator’ into an animated series. His response was ‘Ishikawa, are you insane?’ At that instant, I was confident that we should get on board. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!”
So far we just know it will be set in the Terminator universe, and there are no details yet. It marks the first anime adaptation of the Terminator franchise, although there have been six feature films based on the character which was made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The short synopsis for the 1984 movie goes:
A cyborg assassin is sent back in time to kill Sarah, a waitress, in a bid to stop her son who will wage a long war against his enemy in the future unless the course of history is altered.
