Studio Ghibli was in charge of the animation, and this was the first movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki since The Wind Rises in 2013. It got major recognition through multiple awards since its July 2023 premiere, including the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and the Best Animated Film award at the 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

THE BOY AND THE HERON – Visual

THE BOY AND THE HERON was first released in July 2023 in Japan. The film was inspired by Yoshino Genzaburo’s How Do You Live? novel from 1937, but it also added elements from Miyazaki’s own life rather than just adapting the source material. Its international premiere came at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, while fans in New York first got to see it at the 61st New York Film Festival.

The official synopsis for the movie:
After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.
