A Look Back at The Rising of the Shield Hero
The anime adaptation of The Rising of the Shield Hero adapts the light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi and published by MF Books/KADOKAWA. It premiered in 2019 with a 25-episode first season produced by Kinema Citrus. The story followed Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary young man summoned to another world as the Shield Hero, only to be betrayed and cast aside. His journey of redemption led him to form a close-knit party, including Raphtalia and Filo, as he fought to prove himself and defend the world.
Season 2 aired in 2022 with a slight change in animation production, as Kinema Citrus collaborated with DR Movie. This season adapted the Spirit Tortoise Arc, establishing Naofumi as the most important hero among the four summoned warriors.
The third season, which aired from October to December 2023, returned to Kinema Citrus as the sole studio. Directed by Hitoshi Haga, it focused on Naofumi rebuilding his domain and revealed Raphtalia’s royal lineage, leading to the conflict with Q’ten Lo.
What to Expect in Season 4
Season 4 will most likely continue where Season 3 left off, with Naofumi and his party preparing for the confrontation with Q’ten Lo. After learning that Raphtalia is a descendant of their royal family, the nation sent assassins to eliminate her, forcing Naofumi to take action. The teaser tagline, “The return of the exiled,” suggests Raphtalia’s return to her birth nation.
