TOKUSATSU-DNA Reveals Its First-Ever Ultraman Figure Heading Overseas

A stunning new Ultraman figure is heading overseas, with TOKUSATSU-DNA teaming up with veteran designer Takashi Kinoshita for the upcoming release. TOKUSATSU-DNA’s online store will release a new Ultraman figure inspired by the popular character’s “C-Type” costume, which first premiered in the 1966 TV series. The figure was sculpted by the veteran Takashi Kinoshita who has over 30 years in the industry, and marks the first time that TOKUSATSU-DNA will be releasing an Ultraman figure internationally. Global proxy shipping company Buyee was appointed to handle its international release, with the figure priced at 79,800 yen (~546 USD), and available to preorder until September 27 at 17:59 JST. Delivery is scheduled for late December 2024. You can check out the images and more information below.

The figure is part of TOKUSATSU-DNA Store’s “ProducT” collection, comprising products only available for purchase on its website. For international customers, Buyee’s pop-up screen will appear on the site, guiding customers on how to order. The product listing adds that the figure, titled “TOKUSATSU-DNA Store ProductT ULTRAMAN (C type) by TAKASHI KINOSHITA” is 30cm tall, has a resin-cast body and dedicated polystone pedestal, and features gimmicks like LED-lit eyes. TOKUSATSU-DNA launched in 2016 as an exhibition of suits, props, miniatures, and other items used in actual Tokusatsu filming, participating in efforts to uncover, collect, and restore materials.

Original Suit Actor Bin Furuya Praises New Ultraman Figure’s Authenticity

The press release spotlighted Kinoshita’s attention to detail and realism, having been involved with the project from the early planning stages. The figure was teased as “figure is brimming with realism, capturing the essence of the show’s atmosphere. Every fine detail, from the fingertips to each subtle movement, reflects the care that [Ultraman] suit actor Bin Furuya cherished.” Furuya even commented on the release, describing it as “more authentic than the real thing.”

Kinoshita was quoted as saying:
For this ULTRAMAN figure, it was important to capture not just a still image but the essence of the character in action. I tilted the upper body slightly forward to reflect the stance where ULTRAMAN’s Spacium Beam is aimed at a distant, low object. This gives the figure a rounded back when viewed from the side, which I believe closely aligns with ULTRAMAN’s on-screen appearance. The C-type suit gives the character a broad upper body and a powerful presence, but when viewed from the side, you can still sense the slender build of Mr. Furuya. I aimed to convey that balance in the figure’s design.

Tsuburaya Productions’ Ultraman franchise first launched in 1966, with the Ultra Q TV series. It’s one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, spawning successive series, merchandise, figures, and movies, like Netflix’s recent Ultraman: Rising film, released in June 2024. It premiered in the Global Top 10 for movies with 3.7 million views.
