KADOKAWA has announced a new original anime film from Pompo the Cinephile director Takayuki Hirao, referred to by the project code WASTED CHEF. The film revealed its first teaser trailer, visual, and main staff members on May 31.
The film marks Hirao’s first original feature-length animation project, with the director also handling the original concept and screenplay. According to the project’s introduction, WASTED CHEF combines science fiction and cuisine in a story centered on a young chef navigating a strange world where “taste” has disappeared.
The teaser trailer introduces the anime with the tagline: “That day, ‘you’ and ‘taste’ vanished from the world.”
Hirao previously earned recognition for Pompo the Cinephile, the 2021 film praised for its filmmaking themes and unique visual direction. The director is known for blending traditional animation techniques with experimental visual storytelling, a style that appears set to continue in his latest project.
Joining Hirao is a creative team led by Shingo Adachi, who serves as main character designer. Adachi is known for his work on the Sword Art Online and Lycoris Recoil. Music will be composed by Kenta Matsukuma, whose credits include Kamen Rider Black Sun and 11 Rebels.
Animation production is being handled by CLAP, the studio behind The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes and The Last Blossom. Several staff members who previously collaborated with Hirao on Pompo the Cinephile have reunited for the new project.
The film has already received international attention after being selected for the Annecy Animation Showcase at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The showcase highlights upcoming animated projects considered noteworthy by the festival.
