Wistoria: Wand and Sword episode 4 simply expanded the world past the classroom this week. It wasn’t spectacular but the production retakes proved to be worthwhile and we received a little bit of build-up for the Grand Magic Festival. However, this episode brought about some questions more than anything.
Questions That Need Answers
First and foremost, when are we going to receive background on Kiki? I understand that she’s basically the “mascot” of the series so far, but when she can undue barrier spells like it’s nothing then it makes me want to know more about her and Will’s story.
It’s nothing of great importance, and we saw that Kiki isn’t much of a factor in big fights, as shown in episode 2 with Will facing off against Edward, but it’d still be nice to know. I can’t imagine their backstory being anything grand, but it’d be nice to see.
As for my next question, how many bullies at this academy need a two-man posse behind them? Shion has his two yes-men and now we’re introduced to Julius, who has his very own as well. I get bullies tend to walk in groups to boost their own ego and mask their insecurities, which are starting to show more and more with Shion, but could it hurt to have a little bit of diversity with this?
Now that Shion has seen what Will can really do, he’s taken a back seat to giving him a hard time and focusing on his own training—great. So now that paves the way for someone to replace the bully role and it just so happens to be one of the most powerful students at the academy (shocker). That being said, it does mold a newborn rivalry for the Grand Magic Festival.
Another interest of mine that I want to see answered during the Grand Magic Festival is just how far Colette can go with her magic. It’s obvious Shion is intimidated and we already know she’s an honor student and above the 7,200 credit threshold. So now it’s time to show us how incredible she really is. Luckily, we might see it in the next episode.
Wistoria has drawn comparisons to the likes of Black Clover and Mashle: Magic and Muscles. So what I rather see with Colette is her going down the route of Noelle (Black Clover) in terms of being a force with magic rather than a Lemon (Mashle) who only ever seems to be nothing more than a love interest trope for Mashle.
My last question gears towards Will—what is his real story? He seems to have a soft spoke for the dwarfs, who have no magic and are physically fierce, and even works in a tavern that they, specifically, frequent. On top of all that, he, himself, is magicless but physically gifted.
Is there some dwarf blood in Will after all? Or is it simply that Will can relate to a race of magicless beings that are outcasted and shunned for more or less the same reason that he is?
The Grand Magic Festival – What We Know
If viewers paid attention to the scene where Colette tried to talk Will into joining the Grand Magic Festival, you’ll notice characters in the background already giving hints as to what we’ll be seeing. Some of these events include the Sky Race, which was also teased in the episode 5 preview, and a Dual Duel, which I’m guessing will be a 2v2 matchup.
Another hint in the side conversation was that the Elf Faction (Elleaf Caanan) favors other elves and those who rank highly in magical craft. So if I had to make a prediction it’s that Eleanor will choose Wignall Lindor to join her faction when all is said and done.
We were teased at the end of episode 3 with Zeo being interested in Will possibly joining his faction while the others (Eleanor and Cariot) showed the opposite. And I’d think it’d be too quick to have Elfaria select Will just for them to be reunited in that way. Regardless, there’s still much to unfold with the Grand Magic Festival and any newcomers who will show up.
Each faction represents fire, lightning, wind, and ice respectively with each of the Magia Vender that we were already introduced to. But now, thanks to episode 4, we know that the fifth seat represents the Light Sovereign’s Wand. However, the mystery of who Masterias Noah is will probably be reserved for another day.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 4 Wrap-Up
I mentioned before that it’s easy to root for Will. Now learning he works two jobs just to make ends meet and pay for his education while enduring his current uphill, magicless battle makes me love the guy even more. There is no instance in these first four episodes that would make me think otherwise.
Episode 4 rating: 7/10
