One Piece Manga Goes on Three-Week Hiatus, Eiichiro Oda Explains Why

One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda is taking a three-week break from work following the release of Chapter 1111. The manga will resume on April 22, 2024, as announced in his letter to fans on his X (formerly Twitter) account. Readers can check out the official English translation below:

Unsurprisingly, One Piece fans were notably shocked by Oda’s suggestion that he hadn’t decided on the final treasure. Despite this, the current One Piece manga editor Kaito Anayama recently said that Oda had already shared the ending with him, suggesting the creator’s latest comments are either a joke or that there’s still some fleshing out to do. What’s for certain is that the One Piece won’t be a cliché such as “a family bond,” given Oda’s 2019 interview with Sponichi. While some may be concerned at his statement, Oda stresses that the current situation is “no big deal.” He also said in 2019 that if a reader predicted the ending, he would definitely change it.

As Oda outlined his reasons for the One Piece break, he also mentioned Akira Toriyama, to whom he has paid homage on numerous occasions following his passing on March 1, 2024. Oda joined many members of the anime and manga community in paying tribute, saying, “He is one of the people who took the baton from an era when reading manga would make you stupid, and created an era where both adults and children could read and enjoy manga. He showed us the dream where manga can do things like this and [showed us] that we can go into the world.” In the latest Weekly Shonen Jump release, he added that he believed Toriyama had a halo on his head, having fun without a care in the world.

Following the One Piece break, Chapter 1112 returns on April 22 in Japan, while the latest episodes of the anime series continue to hit Crunchyroll weekly. Netflix is also streaming the latest arc, releasing episodes one week after they air in Japan and on Crunchyroll. The latest One Piece manga Volume 108 was released in Japan on March 4, 2024.

VIZ licenses the series in North America, translating up to Volume 105, and describing it:
With Kaido defeated and Wano saved, it’s time for Luffy and his Straw Hat crew to depart for their next adventure. But big changes are happening all around the world, including the promotion of some new Emperors of the Sea!
