Sarazanmai (2019)
It feels like Sarazanmai came out of nowhere and pleasantly surprised everyone. What starts as a nonsensical story soon becomes a much deeper experience. As characters learn to navigate their struggles, the viewer becomes truly immersed in anime. The anime also gets bonus points for Japanese mythology references. Studio Lapin Track co-produced the series.
The setting is Asakusa. One day, second-years in middle school Kazuki Yasaka, Toi Kuji, and Enta Jinnai meet Keppi, a mysterious kappa-like creature, who steals their shirikodama and transforms them into kappas. “To return to your original forms,” Keppi tells them, “you must fight the zombies and take the shirikodama from them.” Can the boys connect with each other and steal the zombies’ shirikodama?! This is the story of three boys who can’t connect with someone important to them, learning about what it truly means to do so.

Dorohedoro (2020)
Dorohedoro is dark, gritty, and violent. Another one of MAPPA’s Netflix exclusives, it first aired in the Winter of 2020. Unique characters and interesting setting won’t leave you disappointed. The music in this anime is also pretty amazing and definitely makes the watching experience better.
