Jujutsu Kaisen director Shota Goshozono couldn’t hide his excitement as he danced to the stage to claim his Best Director award following the series’ record-breaking performance at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Check the clip out below:
The scenes quickly spread to social media sites like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). Check out some of the reactions:
In addition to winning Best Director, Jujutsu Kaisen took home a record 11 awards, breaking My Hero Academia‘s total set in 2018 at the 2nd Crunchyroll Anime Awards (8). Readers can check out the full list of Crunchyroll Anime Award winners here, with Jujutsu Kaisen taking home an additional Anime of the Year, Best Action, Best Character Design, Best Cinematography, Best Opening Sequence, Best Ending Sequence, Best Supporting Character, Best Voice Actor Performance (Japanese), Best Voice Actor Performance (French), and Best Voice Actor Performance (Portuguese).
Goshozono’s influence on the success of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 can’t be understated, according to those who worked with him. Season 2 animator Shinsaku Kozuma posted to X in late December, “Director Goshozono is amazing. Without his talent, there would not have been a second season of Jujutsu Kaisen. I am grateful.” In a recent interview with Full Frontal, he added:
“Goshozono has what it takes! When I first talked with him, I thought he might be on Akiyuki’s level, perhaps even better. He’s still young, so I don’t think he’s reached that stage yet, but things are clearly just starting for him. He knows what kind of animation he wants to make, but I guess he can still go further from there.“
Jujutsu Kaisen was animated by MAPPA. It was recently revealed that 4 episodes from Jujutsu Kaisen will be rescreened, with the iconic episode “Thunderclap, Part 2” receiving additional footage. Readers can watch the regular series on Crunchyroll, which is described:
Yuji Itadori eats a cursed finger to save a classmate, and now Ryomen Sukuna, a powerfully evil sorcerer known as the King of Curses, lives in Itadori’s soul. Curses are supernatural terrors created from negative human emotions. This cursed energy can be used as a power source by jujutsu sorcerers and cursed spirits alike. Guided by the jujutsu sorcerers, Yuji Itadori joins Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses. Mentored by his teacher Satoru Gojo, Itadori befriends Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki, both first-year students.
Season 2 rewinds the clock as students Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto are tasked with protecting the Star Plasma Vessel. In October 2018, a Veil falls on Shibuya. Gojo enters with Itadori and other jujutsu sorcerers outside, unaware of Geto’s trap.
