Newtype magazine is making a comeback in the United States for a limited time in partnership with Crunchyroll News. A special issue will be released at the upcoming New York Comic Con happening on October 17 to 20 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, NY. This marks the first time Newtype issues in the US published since the last Newtype USA edition in 2008.

The special Newtype issue’s cover features brand-new art for OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom, the newest installment of the Overlord series being brought to theaters this November by Crunchyroll. The back cover shows off custom art from The Apothecary Diaries, which has been confirmed for a second season. Both pieces of art come directly from the respective studios – Madhouse and OLM and Toho Animation Studio.

Within its 16 pages, readers will also find deep dives into a number of the most popular anime of the year so far, including exclusive art and interviews. This collaboration between Newtype and Crunchyroll News is described as a collaborative effort aiming to highlight some of the best releases of the year.

The issue contains interviews with Naoyuki Ito, director of OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom, as well as Norihiro Naganuma, director of The Apothecary Diaries – and other industry names. These exclusives are only available in this very special issue for now, so attendees should keep an eye out for the Crunchyroll News x Newtype logo as they walk the floor of NYCC. Ito will also be giving away one specially signed copy of the collaboration issue during his OVERLORD panel at the event

Newtype magazine has long been synonymous with anime culture, serving as a premier publication for the fandom. The launch of the English version extended that connection to fans outside of Japan, offering a sense of community when anime was still a niche interest globally.

Now, as anime’s growth accelerates, more fans will see why Newtype, with its deep insight and access behind the curtain, was so critical to diving deep into the medium of anime. This magazine holds such a unique place in the hearts of anime fans and seeing it in print in English again — in partnership with Crunchyroll News — is incredibly special.

Statement from Markus Gerdemann, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Crunchyroll

Since its first issue in 1985, the magazine Monthly Newtype published by KADOKAWA has continued to evolve alongside Japan’s world-class animation. The magazine’s appeal revolves around its all-color, large-format visuals, featuring exclusively drawn artworks. It is highly supported by animation fans worldwide of all ages, as Newtype USA and Newtype KOREA were also printed in the 2000s. Newtype is now published in Japanese on the 10th of every month.
