CBS Studios and Propagate Content have partnered with actor and manga enthusiast Masi Oka to bring the dark fantasy manga series Claymore to life as a Hollywood live-action TV series adaptation. This collaboration comes in association with Japanese publishing company Shueisha, which publishes the Claymore manga.
Oka, known for his roles in Heroes and Hawaii Five-0, will serve as an executive producer for the Claymore live-action series alongside Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, and Rodney Ferrell of Propagate Content, as well as Shueisha. The search for a writer to craft the adaptation is currently underway. According to Deadline, the live-action “aims to preserve the action and complex moral dilemmas of the original manga and the anime TV series.” They also mention a renewed interest in live-action manga adaptations following the success of Netflix’s ONE PIECE.
Claymore is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series created by Norihiro Yagi. It first started in Shueisha’s Monthly Shonen Jump magazine in June 2001 and ran there until the magazine’s closure in June 2007. The manga was then moved to the newly launched Jump Square, where it was serialized from November 2007 to October 2014. The story was compiled into 27 volumes. In 2007, MADHOUSE produced a 26-episode anime adaptation, which is streaming on Crunchyroll.
The Claymore manga was licensed for English distribution in North America by Viz Media, with all 27 volumes published between April 2006 and October 2015. VIZ describes the story of Volume 1:
A village is gripped by fear and paranoia when a Yoma claims six lives. The Claymore who is sent to slay the creature isn’t what the villagers expect at all. In fact, she seems more monster than human.
