Sword Art Online Creator Reki Kawahara's Demons' Crest Novel Gets TV Anime Adaptation

A TV anime adaptation of Demons’ Crest (Demons Crest), the mixed reality fantasy novel series by Sword Art Creator Reki Kawahara, has officially been announced.

The announcement was accompanied by a new commemorative illustration from original character designer Yukiko Horiguchi, while additional details about the anime’s staff, cast, studio, and release window have yet to be revealed.

Originally published under Dengeki Bunko, Demon’s Crest is Kawahara’s latest original novel series following his work on Sword Art Online and Accel World.

The story is set in a world shaped by mixed reality (MR) technology. Sixth-grade student Yuma Ashihara is playing the VRMMORPG Actual Magic when the boundaries between the game and reality suddenly collapse, creating a dangerous new world where both have merged.

As Yuma struggles to understand what has happened, he encounters his classmate Sumika Watamaki, one of the school’s most popular girls. However, her appearance has transformed into something resembling a monster from the game, marking the beginning of a deadly survival game.

The original light novel currently has four volumes, with the latest, Demons’ Crest Volume 4: Haken ∽ Soudatsu, scheduled for release on December 10.

A webtoon adaptation illustrated by TO Moe is also currently serialized on the HykeComic platform, with its first collected volume already out.

For now, the anime announcement only confirms that the adaptation is in production. Further information, including the animation studio, staff, cast, and premiere date, will be announced at a later date.
