Spy x Family Episode 6 – One Punch Anya

It’s finally here — Anya’s smug face finally makes its animated appearance in Spy x Family episode 6! Anime and non-anime fans alike have fawned over this manga panel, and I’m happy to report that this amazing scene is truly a pure comedic joy. In addition, we also get some wholesome and funny moments from mother bear Yor and the anxious father, Twilight! The Forger family’s emotional roller coaster ride is so silly. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — WAKU WAKU!

The episode this week continues on to show Anya’s admission into the prestigious Eden Academy. There is not an episode of this series that I find Anya super adorable. From her most random rolling to her uniform excitement to basically all her iconic faces that are truly relatable. Before we get to the best part though, we first must give appreciation to the woman who taught her well — the mama bear Yor!

Spy x Family episode 6 highlights some thoughtful character development for Yor as a parent. It’s really sweet of her to think about how she could be a real mother to Anya, even though the family is a fake set-up. She’s very protective of her daughter, and her pumpkin-piercing action was both scary and wholesome at the same time. Yor was initially worried about her lack of parenting skills, but Anya comforts her in such a sweet way that makes Yor realize her own strengths.

This bonding moment is too precious. I honestly love how this lesson stays with Anya on her first day at school. While Anya trained for self-defense, a stressed-out Twilight, on the other hand, meets with the (super gorgeous) handler to discuss the second part of Operation Strix. It’s a lot of pressure, which is why I can’t help but feel sorry for Twilight — a spy who’s overcome many difficulties — as he becomes anxious over his chances with Anya. It’s really a funny situation.

Spy x Family episode 6 also introduces classmates Becky Blackbell and Damian Desmond, the son of Donovan Desmond who is actually the main target of Operation Strix. Twilight hopes that Anya will be good friends with the arrogant young boy but the plan quickly crashes when Anya unleashes her smug and deadpan smile, followed by her iconic killer check-if-the-teacher-is-looking punch! Even though the friendship scheme is crucial for Twilight’s mission, I can’t help but feel satisfied to see a bully put in place. Powerful stuff, I tell you. Truly Elegant.

This episode is easily one of my favorites. The portrayal of the simple-mindedness, bluntness, and bawling of these cute children is hands down, very good and realistic. I also love the Forger family’s faces at the end — Anya crying, Yor hiding in shame, and Loid stressed and in shock. (ha-ha-ha!)

I honestly had such a fun time watching this episode that it felt too short for me. Nevertheless, I’m more than excited to see what the rest of the days at Eden Academy will be like. The next episode will air on Saturday, May 21, at 23:00 JST and will be available to watch with English subtitles on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Muse Asia, and Bilibili in select regions.
