Demon Slayer: Infinity Train Now 3rd Highest Grossing Anime Film In Japan Behind Your Name And Spirited Away

Yes, it’s still breaking records. I didn’t really plan on writing about it as not a day goes by without some Demon Slayer update, but this seems important enough. According to the official twitter, the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Train Arc” anime film is now the 3rd highest grossing film in Japan. Of all time. It earned around ~20.4 billion yen (approximately ~$193 million USD) and overtook 2 Ghibli films today. Both were written and directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, and they are Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. What’s even more amazing is that it has only been 24 days since it released on October 16 of this year. Here’s another reminder of the latest visual for the movie:

The only anime films that have earned more in Japan are now Spirited Away (2001) and Your Name (2016). However, it’s probably only a question of how long it will take the Demon Slayer: Infinity Train movie to earn ~10B more yen and go up from 3rd place. Spirited Away has earned roughly 30.8B yen, while Your Name is around 25B yen. They also recently announced new “freebies” to be given to the fans in theaters. They will release a new one every 2 weeks starting on November 14. We’ll see how those affect the sales in the following weeks! Its numbers in Japan are enough to place it high even on the worldwide gross list. But will leave that for another time. For now, here’s the link to the last trailer to watch as we wait for the 2021 international release. (Care for potential spoilers even though it’s an official trailer.)
