‘My Current Dream’: J-Pop Star Ado Says She’s Aiming for a Grammy

Ado shared in a new interview that her current goal is to win a Grammy. Speaking to Billboard, she said, “My current dream and concrete goal is to win a Grammy. Another goal and dream of mine is to someday do a world tour that will be even bigger than my upcoming Hibana tour.“

Crunchyroll will be ‘powering’ the Hibana tour, which kicks off this month and will span over 30 cities across Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and Latin America. Officially titled the “Ado WORLD TOUR 2025 ‘Hibana’ Powered by Crunchyroll,” the first tour stop will be the Saitama Super Arena in Japan on April 26. Ado’s manager and label lead, Takuya Chigira, backs her dream of winning a Grammy. Speaking to Real Sound, Chigira revealed fears that J-Pop would become a niche genre overshadowed by K-Pop. With the music markets of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand rapidly growing and drawing influence from K-Pop, Chigira gave a hypothetical scenario where, “If the music of any of these countries reaches overseas in a few years, I think the original K-pop-style music will be recognized as ‘Asian Pop.’

If ‘Asian Pop’ is established, there is a possibility that the J-pop that we are making will become a niche music within Asian Pop. This is just a hypothetical situation, but I think that J-pop needs to be established globally before that happens.“

He’s pinning his hopes on Ado to introduce J-Pop and Vocaloid to the world, adding, “Looking at the current Japanese music scene, I think that Ado is the only solo artist who can compete on the global stage and reach her prime within the next 3 or 4 years. I believe that she is the only Japanese artist who can snag the main Grammy award.”

Sony Music Entertainment’s Yohei Yashiro, the producer of fellow popular J-Pop duo YOASOBI, also recently spoke on establishing J-Pop overseas. He revealed that YOASOBI is losing money on overseas tours, but deems the experience necessary for creative inspiration and avoiding slumps. YOASOBI will perform at Primavera Sound Barcelona 2025 on June 5 and London’s Wembley Stadium on June 8-9.
