An anime project is in the works for the Class de 2-banme ni Kawaii Onnanoko to Tomodachi ni Natta (I Became Friends with the Second Cutest Girl in the Class) light novel series. The project was announced during the Sneaker Bunko 35th Anniversary Festa special livestream event on Sunday. An announcement illustration was also unveiled but the format is yet to be revealed.
Class de 2-banme ni Kawaii Onnanoko to Tomodachi ni Natta (I Became Friends with the Second Cutest Girl in the Class) light novel series is written by Takata. The story was initially launched on Kadokawa’s Kakuyomu website in November 2020. Kadokawa’s Sneaker Bunko imprint published the first volume in December 2021 with illustrations by Tom Osabe. A manga adaptation by Rin Ono is ongoing on Kadokawa’s Comic Alive+ website. Kadokawa also released a voice drama video last year on their official YouTube with Manaka Iwami voicing the titular character Umi Asanagi and Haruki Ishiya voicing Maki Maehara.
The romantic comedy plot follows Maki Maehara, a high school boy who has trouble fitting in. One day he and Umi Asanagi, deemed as the “second cutest girl” in his class become friends. While she usually hangs out with Yuu Amami, the cutest girl in their class after school, on Fridays she spends the day with Maehara instead. Together they enjoy their time by eating junk food, watching TV, reading manga, playing video games, and other indoor hobbies.
