Devil May Cry Season 2 Reveals New Images, Adi Shankar Talks Vergil and Breaking Formula

Netflix has shared new images for the upcoming Devil May Cry Season 2, along with a quote from the show’s showrunner Adi Shankar. The first season of the animated series was released on Netflix on April 3, while the sequel announcement came just a week later. The project was first announced in September 2023 as “an anime series from Capcom, Studio Mir & Adi Shankar.”

Series creator Adi Shankar commented:

“I’m allergic to formula. I dislike when successful shows turn into comfort food. Devil May Cry won’t be TV that loops. My mission for Season 2 was to capture the feeling of a 2000s film franchise entry where the audience can’t predict the next turn.”

Shankar also commented on what excites him most about adapting Vergil for the series:

“His restraint. The interesting part is that Vergil’s a guy who can stand completely still and still feel like the most dangerous one in the room. His presence does the talking.”

Devil May Cry is a popular action-adventure and hack-and-slash game franchise created by Hideki Kamiya and developed primarily by Capcom. The series follows Dante, a demon hunter with supernatural abilities, as he fights demons that threaten humanity. The voice cast includes:

  • Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante
  • Scout Taylor-Compton as Mary
  • Hoon Lee as White Rabbit
  • Kevin Conroy as VP Baines
  • Chris Coppola as Enzo

The game series originally debuted in 2001 and has since expanded to include six mainline entries:

  1. Devil May Cry (2001)
  2. Devil May Cry 2 (2003)
  3. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening (2005)
  4. Devil May Cry 4 (2008)
  5. DmC: Devil May Cry (2013) – a reboot developed by Ninja Theory
  6. Devil May Cry 5 (2019)

In addition to the main entries, the franchise has had multiple remasters, special editions, and collections, including Devil May Cry HD Collection and enhanced re-releases of Devil May Cry 3Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, and Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition.

The series already has one anime adaptation by studio MADHOUSE, which premiered in June 2007. It has 12 episodes and focuses on Dante’s daily life as a demon hunter.
