Hiromu Arakawa’s iconic manga series Fullmetal Alchemist is making its debut on WEBTOON, arriving May 7 in a newly reformatted edition designed for the platform’s vertical scroll format and presented in full color.
WEBTOON Entertainment Inc. announced the launch today, marking a significant addition to its roster of global IPs. The release brings the popular manga to WEBTOON’s English-language platform, offering both longtime fans and new readers a digitally optimized experience. Ahead of its release, fans can look forward to another manga, From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman, which arrives to WEBTOON later today.
Originally serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan from 2001 to 2010, Fullmetal Alchemist follows the journey of brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who suffer devastating consequences after attempting the forbidden act of human transmutation. Edward loses his leg and sacrifices his arm to save Alphonse’s soul, which he binds to a suit of armor. Together, the brothers embark on a quest to restore their bodies, confronting moral dilemmas and uncovering dark secrets along the way.
Over the past two decades, Fullmetal Alchemist has expanded beyond its original manga to have multiple anime adaptations (the original one from 2003 and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood from 2009), feature films, live-action adaptations, light novels, and video games, cementing its status as one of the most influential works in modern manga.
“Fullmetal Alchemist is the kind of story that stays with you for life—whether you’ve read the original manga, watched the anime, or found it through its passionate global fandom,” said Yongsoo Kim, Head of Global WEBTOON at WEBTOON Entertainment. “Bringing this iconic series to WEBTOON audiences gives both longtime fans and first-timers a new way to enjoy this story. It’s emotional, it’s intense, and now it’s easier than ever to fall in love with it all over again.”
The addition of Fullmetal Alchemist to WEBTOON continues the platform’s expansion of established franchises into the webcomic space. Recent partnerships have included titles and brands from DC Comics, IDW Publishing, Archie Comics, Ubisoft, and artists under HYBE such as BTS, TXT, and ENHYPEN.
WEBTOON Entertainment currently hosts approximately 160 million monthly active users across its portfolio of storytelling platforms. The company’s content ecosystem includes WEBTOON, Wattpad, WEBTOON Unscrolled, and other affiliated brands, with adaptations spanning platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Crunchyroll.
Fullmetal Alchemist will be available to read globally on WEBTOON starting May 7.
