The hit manga series Golden Kamuy is getting a live-action film adaptation. The latest, 29th volume revealed that the movie has been green-lit, however, as of now there has been no information regarding the cast, staff, or the release date. Golden Kamuy manga is ending this month in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.
Golden Kamuy is a manga written by Satoru Noda. It started serialization in 2014 in Weekly Young Jump magazine. It currently has 30 volumes out, with the 31st (also final) set to release in July. During its serialization, Golden Kamuy won the Manga Taisho Award and it even placed second in the male character category of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings.
The manga received an anime adaptation in the spring of 2018 with 12 episodes. A sequel followed in the fall of the same year. The third season aired in 2020. Geno Studio animated all of them. Season 4 is also in the work and will premiere this October. The new season also brought a studio change, as studio Brain’s Base is animating it.
The manga was licensed by Viz Media in English and they describe the plot as:
In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.
