What’s Sengoku Nehan About?

In the Sengoku era, those born into peasant families who were not allowed to inherit farmland left their villages in search of a better future. However, it was impossible for ordinary people to become samurai, and they inevitably became known as bandits.

Saburo, born in the village of Tsukinashi, faced a similar fate. He refused to obey his father and older brothers, constantly seeking to escape from their control. During his wanderings, he came across a small hut on the outskirts of the village. There, he found an old one-armed man named Inzo, who lived alone. The adults of the village avoided the hut out of fear, but disobedient children—known as wayandare (troublemakers)—naturally gathered there, eager to escape the watchful eyes of grown-ups.

Among these children were:

  • Saburo, the third son of a peasant family, always in conflict with his father.
  • Kyo, a wild and uncontrollable girl.
  • Mozu, unusually tall and lanky for his age.

For amusement, Inzo began teaching them swordsmanship—a style known as “Unmei-ken” (The Sword of Fate). As time passed, a certain incident brought them into contact with the “Shura-to”, a bandit group based in the nearby mountains. What will become of Saburo and his friends, once labeled wayandare? In a world ruled by fate, how will they forge their own destinies?
