Everyone knows the feeling. You’re watching a really raunchy anime. Your blood pressure is on an uptick, you can feel your heart racing, your arms are heavy, your palms are sweaty, and your mom is just waiting for peak degeneracy to open the door. And, in that moment, at the height of excitement, you think to yourself, “You know what would go good right about now… food.” Well, the PR team over at Gushing Over Magical Girls understands that feeling all too well. As part of the anime’s promotional campaign, Gushing Over Magical Girls will receive a limited edition merchandise run at Akiba Cultures Zone starting on February 9, 2024. Here fans who spend over ¥10,000 (~68 USD) will be entered in a lottery to win autographed prints. Anyone purchasing merch over ¥6000 (~40 USD) will receive a free acrylic keychain. A pop-up cafe will also launch on February 14.
Over at the Cafe & Bar Menu located in Sotokanda (Chiyoda), fans who show up to the Gushing Over Magical Girls Pop-up Cafe will be able to purchase styled limited edition drinks, main courses, and desserts that range from ¥880 (~6 USD) to ¥2200 (~15 USD). Dropping into the cafe will net you goodies such as coasters, trading cards, and keychains.
The anime adaptation of Akihiro Ononaka’s Gushing Over Magical Girls is currently simulcasting uncensored on Hidive and will have 13 episodes. The story is a beautiful tale of a young girl’s (Utena Hiiragi) quest for self-acceptance, and introspection and how she comes to terms with the flaws and shortcomings of her character. Or at least we could phrase it that way.
Remember kids, the media portrays their version of things. Gushing Over Magical Girls follows the main protagonist, Utena Hiiragi, as she is coerced into becoming an evil magical girl. But sometimes, it just takes a little push to plunge down the rabbit hole. Upon her first skirmish with her town’s resident magical girls, Utena realizes that she has some peculiar likes. Ones which she quickly spirals into as the show progresses.
