March 9, known as Miku Day (3/9 can be read as “Mi-ku” in Japanese), was marked with a special collaboration between McDonald’s Japan and the popular virtual pop star Hatsune Miku. The collaboration has Miku promoting the Shaka Shaka fries.
As part of the collaboration, McDonald’s Japan has released a special promotional video titled “I’ll Shake It for You♪” (“Shiteyan’yo”). The video playfully references one of Miku’s most iconic songs, “Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru♪”, a hit that helped launch the Vocaloid into mainstream popularity.
The video features Hatsune Miku enjoying Shaka Shaka Potato fries, McDonald’s popular shakeable flavored fries. For those unfamiliar, Shaka Shaka Potato is a limited-time menu item from McDonald’s Japan which allows you to shake a bag of fries with a special flavored seasoning. The name “Shaka Shaka” stands for the sound of shaking the bag.
This is not the first time Hatsune Miku has teamed up with major brands. Over the years, she has collaborated with companies like Domino’s Pizza Japan, and more recently with Pokémon the Fortnite game.
COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing anime movie also recently premiered in Japan, while GKIDS is bringing it to North America on April 11.
