At the Netflix Festival Japan 2021, a Kakegurui spin-off anime titled Kakegurui Twin was announced for August 2022. It will focus on Mary Saotome 1 year before Yumeko Jabami transferred to the Hyakkaou Private Academy, and studio MAPPA will handle the production, just like with seasons 1 and 2 of the original anime. A key visual is also available:
Homura Kawamoto is the writer behind Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler. It is an ongoing manga that focuses on Yumeko Jabami, a female student who attends the Hyakkaou Private Academy. Yumeko’s thirst for gambling threatens the gambling hierarchy of the academy. Yen Press licensed the manga in English, and they describe the story:
Hyakkaou Private Academy. An institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum. You see, when you’re the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy, it’s not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead. It’s reading your opponent. The art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling? At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!
In addition, the popular manga has received various adaptations, ranging from 2 anime seasons by Studio MAPPA to theatrical films and dramas. It first released back in 2017.
The Kakegurui Twin spin-off anime will be Jabami-less, but it might be just as interesting to see what the academy was like before she arrived!
