Makoto Shinkai Shares Early Concept Illustration for Your Name on Film’s 10th Anniversary

Makoto Shinkai shared an early concept illustration for Your Name. to mark 10 years since the film’s Japanese theatrical release. The film premiered in Japan on August 26, 2016.

Shinkai said the image was created around Fall 2015 while he was considering ideas for the film’s teaser poster. Commenting on the anniversary, Shinkai said he was happy that the story continues to remain with viewers and thanked everyone who has watched Your Name. over the past decade. He also noted that there are no particular events planned for the 10th anniversary.

Shinkai also commented on his next film, confirming that the production team continues working on the new movie. He said filmmaking remains as difficult and unfamiliar to him as it was a decade ago, describing the process as something that is still unknown and exciting. You can read his full post below.

It has been ten years today since Your Name. was released. Time really flies.

It makes me very happy to know that this story still remains in people’s hearts. We on the production team were also fortunate to have many wonderful experiences through Your Name.

There aren’t any special 10th-anniversary events planned, haha, but the production team is still hard at work on a new film that we hope to bring to you.

As for me personally, it’s not as though I’ve become much better at making films over these ten years. Filmmaking is still an extremely difficult job. Just as it was ten years ago, it remains something unknown and exciting.

I’ll keep doing my best so that we can bring you an entertaining film as soon as possible.

Your Name. went on to become one of the biggest international successes in Japanese animation. The film earned more than ¥25 billion (~$158 million USD) at the Japanese box office and became the highest-grossing Japanese film worldwide at the time, a record later surpassed by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has since also overtaken it globally. Your Name currently remains Japan’s fourth-highest-grossing anime film domestically, behind Mugen Train, Infinity Castle and Spirited Away.

Shinkai later went on to direct Weathering with You in 2019 and Suzume in 2022.
