Japanese animation studio MAPPA announced a partnership with film company K2 Pictures to produce Japanese anime and live-action films for the global market. K2 Pictures is a newly launched company by Muneyuki Kii, a former producer at Toei. Part of the partnership is the establishment of a film fund dedicated to Japanese films to enrich local productions by returning profits traditionally accruing to film companies to both investors and creators. The funding also aims to produce projects with emerging and established creators.
K2 Pictures will officially announce more details about the new company and the partnership at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, on May 18. Aside from Muneyuki, other key personalities who will join the presentation include Japanese film directors Miwa Nishikawa and Takashi Miike.
Muneyuki Kii issued a statement: “Through the launch of K2 Pictures, we’re aiming to bring a major revolution to the Japanese film industry, while also giving new domestic and overseas investors the chance to enter this flourishing industry. It’s clear there is growing interest in Japanese-related content around the world, so we are committed to making our local film industry more active, fairer, and profitable in the global marketplace, while also building a robust content pipeline that promises to captivate audiences. Our new fund will also stand as a beacon for innovation, combining risk mitigation strategies with a commitment to artistic excellence – and with our seasoned and highly experienced leadership team – we are positioned to make a significant impact on the global film landscape.“
MAPPA representatives stated that they are participating in this project as they want to support K2 Pictures in their challenge. As an animation studio, they aim to do their best to think about what they can do as a partner in film production.
Aside from MAPPA, other partners of K2 Pictures include directors Hirokazu Kore-eda, Shunji Iwai, Miwa Nishikawa, Takashi Miike, and Kazuya Shiraishi.
