Milan Records has released the original motion picture soundtrack for The Colors Within, the latest animated movie by acclaimed director Naoko Yamada. The music was composed by Kensuke Ushio, a leading figure in the Japanese electronic music scene. The album is now available on all major streaming platforms and features 52 tracks, including full-length versions of songs performed by the movie’s characters.

The soundtrack is split into two discs:

  • Disc 1 includes character songs and score tracks, such as “Born Slippy Nuxx” and “Amen, I’m Going Somewhere.”
  • Disc 2 features instrumental pieces like “The Sound of Waves” and “Clouds,” capturing the movie’s dreamy atmosphere.

Directed by Naoko Yamada (whom we’ve had the chance to interview) and produced by Science SARU, the movie follows high schooler Totsuko, who has the unique ability to see people’s emotions as “colors.” Along with her classmates Kimi and Rui, Totsuko forms a band despite not playing an instrument herself. Practicing in an old church on a remote island, the trio discovers the power of music to forge connections and navigate adolescence.

The movie premiered at the Annecy International Film Festival, selling out its debut screening, and went on to win the Best Animation Film Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival. It made its US theatrical debut on January 24 via GKIDS.

Kensuke Ushio is a composer and electronic musician known for his work across anime, movies, and TV. His previous collaborations with Yamada were A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird, and the The Heike Story. Some of his other notable projects include:

  • Ping Pong the Animation (2014)
  • DEVILMAN crybaby (2018)
  • Chainsaw Man (2022)
  • Heavenly Delusion (2023)
