MindaRyn surprised fans with her first Spanish concert at the convention “Salon del Manga Alicante” in March 28-29. As part of her first European solo live tour titled “My Link, Your Link,” the Thai singer took the stage both days of the convention, followed by signing sessions with fans.
The artist started her musical career by releasing covers of popular anime songs on her YouTube channel. Thanks to these early performances, MindaRyn caught the attention of the Japanese label Lantis, eventually signing with them. From that point forward, she released her own original songs, including themes for famous anime franchises such as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (TenSura), Arifureta, Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke’s Mansion, Shy, and Sengoku Youko.
For this article, rather than following the chronological setlist, let’s dive into the thematic highlights of her first stay in Alicante!
One of the first songs of her setlist was “Daylight,” the opening theme of Arifureta Season 2. The song is charged with a certain melancholy that is reinforced if you look up the lyrics. Yet when MindaRyn reached the chorus, we felt empowered by faith and confidence in a better future.
Taking out her acoustic guitar, MindaRyn reached out to fans through “Shiny Girl,” the opening theme of Shy. The audience replied to her uplifting performance by clapping along to the chorus, excited by MindaRyn’s charm.
Changing to a more dramatic, softer tone, the singer got the crowd absorbed with “Fireworks”, the ending theme featured in Episode 6 of Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke’s Mansion. MindaRyn, who also performs the opening of the anime, showed us she can make us travel from buoyant performances to a dramatic atmosphere.
Two of her other anisongs featured in the concert were “HIBANA” and “Sekidei”, themes performed for the mythological drama Sengoku Youko. Even though the tracks were produced for different seasons of the anime, both anisongs conveyed the story’s emotional intensity—a feat only possible thanks to MindaRyn.
Outside the traditional anime franchises, MindaRyn graced us with “Altair and Vega,” the theme song of the 3D animated short series Milky Subway: The Galactic Limited Express. The performance was a good opportunity to dance along with the catchy rhythm of the song.
Moreover, MindaRyn has many popular songs under her belt. Still, we couldn’t hide our astonishment when she unleashed her cover of “God Knows…” without prior notice. Originally performed by Aya Hirano for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, the song is a hymn for the otaku community around the world that we inevitably chanted along with all our hearts.
At this point you may be wondering “aren’t we missing something?” Yes, among these memorable songs MindaRyn also performed her theme songs from TenSura. The first one was the cozy “Miracle Soup,” the ending song of the third season of TenSura, filling the audience with a warm feeling. Later in the show she delivered the electrifying “Like Flames”, opening song of season 2 part 2 of the same anime and a personal favorite. As another track that is popular among the audience, ‘Like Flames’ had us all singing the English lyrics with the artist.
However, this wasn’t the only surprise for TenSura fans. MindaRyn also showcased her cover of “Another Colony,” the first ending theme of the series, originally performed by singer TRUE. During her cover, also available on MindaRyn’s YouTube channel, the artist demonstrated that she’s both a solid vocalist and a TenSura fan.
The excitement from both MindaRyn and the audience could be summarized in one moment: when MindaRyn stepped off the stage and started singing amid the crowd. Her performance became a priceless memory for us.
We want to extend our thanks to MindaRyn for the afternoon full of memories and new discoveries, as many of the songs showcased were an opportunity to discover new franchises. We also want to extend our thanks to Japan Weekend, as they are the organizers of “Salon del Manga Alicante” events.
If you want to attend future concerts, Japan Weekend confirmed its next Madrid event for September 26-27 at a new location: the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The tickets are currently on sale.
