My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 2 is out! And it shows that disappointment is something unbeknownst to its lexicon. With sis-cons, Deesus, matrix moves, and Koshitan’s virginity once again at stake, the show brought laughs so hard I peed myself.
Female Siscons: A Dangerous Situation
Few things in life are as stressful or demoralizing as investing time and money into a project, only for it to be as prosperous as the second season of No Game No Life. And by that, I mean it’s nonexistent. Former delinquent and current shoujo fan girl Koshitan knows this feeling all too well. After investing her life savings to spruce up the Deer Club, in the span of one school day, she comes back to see the clubhouse in utter shambles.
If that weren’t bad enough, the club’s resident deer has had various attempts on her life. Lots of that is going around lately. So, while one can expect random assassinations in Butler, Port-au-Prince, or Belize City, in Japan, that’s the height of civil unrest.
As Nokotan is caught in a trap, Koshitan almost catches a bullet Kunai to the ear, their aggressor is revealed. And it’s none other than Torako’s sis-con sister, Anko. And while a human/deer hybrid is believable in my book, Sis-cons are a step too far.
Maybe it would be different if my onee-chan was Koshitan, but one can only judge based on their experiences. So, if I were to judge sibling affection and the ideal woman based on my sister, not only could I never understand affection towards a sibling. I couldn’t understand affection at all. But this is anime, it’s filled with idealism, and Koshitan is the peak woman. So her obsessive, sis-con imouto and pet deer are about to duke it out for her time, love, affection, and virginity.
The Fight for Torako
Now, I never understood anime or anyone’s obsession with virginity. If a decade of remote travel and adventuring has taught me anything, it’s that a wise man makes damn sure he’s never the first one to stick any part of his body into a hole. That’s how armadillos get you. Sure, they look cuddly, but trust me, those claws, HURT.
Armadillos aside, Nokotan and Anko now find themselves in a life-and-death game show battle for Koshitan that mirrors the brutality of the assault on Iwo Jima. And as the day passes, Anko realizes the upper hand she thought she had was a flub. So, she pulls a top-ten anime betrayal and attacks the defenseless Nokotan. But she dodges them a-la-Matrix, until a rouge kunai flies towards Koshitan. Making damn sure to protect her waifu, Nokotan instead take the hits, mortally injuring herself.
Deesus Saves
As the world around her begins to fade and that deep cold embraces her tighter than a mother embraces her firstborn, the great sleep beckons Nokotan. And she realizes there’s no need to hold on, she welcomes the end and peacefully passes in Koshitan’s arms.
In Norse mythology, when a great warrior is slain, the valkyries ride down on steeds faster than the wind to take them to Odin’s great hall. But in Japan, when you give up the ghost, it’s deer that fly down from the heavens to welcome you home. And so, deerngles fly down from the great beyond to take Nokotan to the land of eternal joy. And as I watched this scene and a deer version of ‘Nearer, My God, to Thee,’ started to play, I laughed so hard that my age showed and I peed myself a bit, which sucked because now my tent stinks.
In last week’s review, I promised readers I’d get to the bottom of “Why Humans Aren’t Deer?” Because the moment I saw that I knew it wasn’t just a gag joke, I knew that Oshioshio was trying to tell us something profound. And as I rummaged through the jungles of the Yucatan, I came upon a shaman who told me the story of the god Yum Kaax, protector of all game.
In the prophecies of old, a person with the soul of a deer would rise in the east, meet their end, and ascend to the heavens. But, heaven would reject it, as it was not yet its time. And when I saw this exact scene in the anime, I knew in the deepest recess of my heart that My Deer Friend Nokotan was like the iceberg that sank the Titanic. The main portion of the story is hidden deep in the water. But that’s another story. In our current one as Nokotan finds herself back on Earth, she makes peace with Anko, the power of friendship prevails, and My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 2 ends.

Remember last week when like 18 people on Reddit were complaining about the subtitles the show had while the rest of the world was just like “Meh?” Well, grammar purists rejoice, this week around they’re better. Someone made an off-hand comment that the reason the first week’s subs were so bad was because it was the free YouTube version, and there’s no need to make anything free good.
Others said that no one cares because it’s the English language, and the English language is like TikTok influencers, no one with more than two brain cells cares about it. Both of these might be true. Regardless of your thoughts on it, better-flowing subtitles are a good thing.
On the voice acting and OST, there’s nothing bad to say so far. It’s quirky, it’s dead-pan subdued and there’s enough variety to keep one entertained. And with any medium, entertainment is the most important thing.
