Natsume’s Book of Friends is a manga series by Yuki Midorikawa. It was serialized by Hakusensha’s LaLa DX from June 2003 to April 2008 before moving to LaLa in 2007. Viz Media has licensed the manga in English, with 28 volumes currently out:
Takashi Natsume can see the spirits and demons that hide from the rest of humanity. He has always been set apart from other people because of his gift, drifting from relative to relative, never fitting in. Now he’s a troubled high school student who has come to live in the small town where his grandmother grew up. And there he discovers that he has inherited more than just the Sight from the mysterious Reiko.
Yuki Midorikawa is known for her other manga works which include Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies), Hiiro no Isu (The Scarlet Chair) and Akaku Saku Koe (The Voice That Blooms Red).
The franchise sprang six anime seasons, with the last season airing back in 2017. Directors for the anime include Takahiro Omori (from season 1 to season 4) and Kotomi Deai (season 5 to season 6). Studios Brain’s Base (season 1 to season 4) and Shuka (season 5 to season 6) have worked on the animation. Crunchyroll is streaming all seasons of the series.
