Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine featured Monkey D. Luffy and Uta from the One Piece Film Red on the cover of the latest issue, which was released on Monday. The cover reveals that the film has grossed over ¥17.5 billion (≒ $119 million) and that it’s the biggest hit of this year. The issue also compiles the 1065th chapter of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece with a colored double-page spread at the beginning.
One Piece Film Red is the series’ latest film. It premiered on August 6, 2022, in Japan. The film is the best performing in the franchise so far.
The official Twitter page of the One Piece series posted a video of the colored spread being made by the manga author.
Uta is a movie original character and is a singer in the One Piece world. Kaori Nazuka (Chelsea in Akame ga Kill! and Eureka in Eureka Seven) voiced the character, while singer Ado was in charge of her singing voice in the film. A live performance of the character performing the One Piece Film Red‘s theme song “New Genesis” was held to commemorate the manga series’ 500 million circulating copy milestone, and it took place on the eve of the 104th volume’s release date, October 4.
