On July 4th, we had the opportunity to attend an Anime Expo 2024 panel from Studio Bones and Kodansha. The event was held in Los Angeles, California. There we had another look at the previously revealed materials, some more details, and the how-it-came-to-be process of the GACHIAKUTA anime.
The panel was hosted by Joey “The Anime Man” from GeeXPlus and the Trash Taste Podcast. It featured several key people related to the project:
- Naoki Amano (Anime Producer at Bones)
- Megumu Tsuchiya (Editor at Kodansha)
- Hirotsugu Ogo (Producer at Avex)
Lots of things were discussed, but below are some of the main takeaways from me as an attendee.
Firstly, I felt that the art from Kei Urana (the mangaka) and the graffiti designs from Ando Hideyoshi were a very different yet interesting way to go about doing manga, and so I am sure the anime will be very pleasing aesthetically! Regarding the art style, they said that both the Amano and Tsuchiya are taking it slow to ensure that the anime turns out well.
Both the anime director and manga editor also shared how they were quite surprised by the reception of their anime adaption announcement in the United States. It made them both happy and a bit nervous as, like they’d already mentioned earlier, they wanted to make sure this show was a success. Even Kei Urana herself was quite happy when she found out about the anime announcement for her work. They played a video of her saying how she remembers just yelling “YES!” at the news and that it was quite ecstatic.
Another thing they shared at the panel was that Kei Urana has plenty of involvement in the adaption, so we can expect that it won’t venture off and that it will be faithful to the source.
My opinion is that GACHIAKUTA already had the potential to be big if done right thanks to its epic artwork and fun story, and I believe it will get a great adaptation by people who are passionate about the project. All I can say is that I can’t wait to see how this goes! For the end, here’s a short message they had for all our followers looking forward to the anime.
GACHIAKUTA has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine since February of 2022. The manga is both written and illustrated by Kei Urana, but it features Ando Hideyoshi’s graffiti designs. Kodansha US licensed the series in English.
