Makoto Shinkai wished followers on X (formerly Twitter) a Happy New Year in a post reflecting on his 2024. He shared that he spent the year working on his upcoming new movie, describing the experience as a “great joy to build a new world that no one has ever seen before from scratch with my colleagues.” He added that he’ll do his best to inform fans about the film this year, concluding, “I hope that 2025 will be a peaceful year for all of you.” You can check out the post below.

Shinkai fans can already look ahead to the upcoming live-action adaptation of his 5 Centimeters per Second. The film is slated for a Fall 2025 release and saw Hokuto Matsumura from SixTONES cast as Takaki Tono. Matsumura previously worked with Shinkai as the voice of protagonist Souta Munakata in Suzume, starring alongside Nanoka Hara as the titular lead character Suzume Iwato. Fans may recall Hara as Kana Arima from the recent Oshi no Ko live-action TV series and film.
CoMix Wave Films to Open New Film Theater in Makoto Shinkai’s Hometown
Given the timing, Shinkai’s new film may inaugurate CoMix Wave Films’ new movie theater, CWF CINEMAS, slated to open in the summer of 2026 in Shinkai’s hometown of Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. Animation Business Journal reported in August that the director is taking a prominent role in establishing the theater, investing in it through his own company, Shinkai Creative Co., Ltd. CoMix Wave Films is also a listed investor, alongside founder Noritaka Kawaguchi’s personal company. Kawaguchi was also appointed president and CEO of CWF CINEMAS. CoMix Wave Films is well-known for producing several films directed by Shinkai, such as Suzume, Weathering with You, Your Name, and 5 Centimeters per Second.
