Sword Art Online: Progressive – Scherzo of Deep Night has released a new trailer focusing on Mito’s scenes. The previous trailers of the movie only showed a glimpse of Mito’s face but now we were able to see her new character design. The anime film premiered on October 22, 2022 in Japan. The movie topped the Japanese Box Office during its opening weekend on October 22 and 23, earning over 323 million yen (~US$2.17 million), and selling more than 199, 000 tickets. Haruka Tomatsu and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka reprised their roles as the protagonists, Asuna, and Kirito respectively. Shiori Izawa also came back to the franchise after 10 years to voice Argo, who initially appeared in episode 3 of the original Sword Art Online series. Inori Minase also restated her role as Mito, the original anime character of the Progressive movie series.
Sword Art Online: Progressive – Scherzo of Deep Night is part of the 10th-anniversary projects of Sword Art Online‘s franchise. Ayako Kono directed the movie at studio A-1 Pictures. On November 6, an event titled Sword Art Online: Full Dive will be held to commemorate the milestone. November 6, which is also the in-story anniversary of the game’s launch.

The anime film is based on the 4th volume of Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online: Progressive light novel series. ASCII Media Works has been publishing it with abec’s illustrations since 2012, and it currently has 8 volumes available. The story of the movie adapts the events on the 5th floor of Aincard. Yen Press licensed the Sword Art Online: Progressive light novel series in English and describes the plot of volume 4 as:
It’s been just two months since they were trapped in the game of death that is Sword Art Online, and Kirito and Asuna continue their struggle at the vanguard of progress through the game. The fifth floor of Aincrad is a mazelike ruin, and the two dare to take pleasure in raiding it for the treasure it contains. Upon returning to the fourth floor, it’s time to do some questing on behalf of the Elf Lord Yofilis–but here begins Asuna’s discontent, for in doing so they will have to face her least favorite monster ever…
