Riot Games has officially detailed the launch of Teamfight Tactics (TFT) Set 15, titled K.O. Coliseum, a new anime-themed update that drops players into Whisker’s ultimate anime fighting tournament. The set goes live on Public Beta Environment (PBE) servers today and is scheduled for full release on PC and mobile platforms on July 30.
Set 15 is bringing along an interesting shift in tone and style, with K.O. Coliseum serving as what Lead Set Designer Michael Sloan describes as “a love letter to the anime fighting tournament genre.” Drawing on tropes from shonen series, magical girl transformations, and mechas, the set introduces a wide range of anime-inspired traits, gameplay mechanics, and visuals.
Gameplay and Traits
K.O. Coliseum features a wide range of anime-style champions, including returning characters like Braum, Gwen, Twisted Fate, Varus, Yone, and Zyra. Seraphine joins the roster as a 5-cost champion with a large-area damaging spell, themed as a “Friendship Bomb.” The set also sees the return of Kobuko, TFT’s first original character from Runeterra, as a 2-cost unit with the new Mentor trait.
Set 15 introduces several new traits and origins:
- Soul Fighter: Champions stack attack damage and ability power each second, gaining true damage at max stacks.
- Star Guardian: Champions power up through a unique Teamwork Bonus based on allies present.
- Crystal Gambit: Players accumulate “Gem Power” through wins and losses. Every four rounds, they can either cash out or double down for higher stakes.
- Mighty Mech: Mech champions scale with number and star level, granting strength to a single mech unit.
- Wraith: Units deal damage to the nearest three enemies and heal the lowest-health Wraith for a portion of damage dealt.
- Battle Academia: Champions upgrade their abilities over time.
- Luchador: Champions gain a second wind at half health, cleansing effects, healing, and knocking up enemies.
- Mentor: Unlocking all four Mentors grants upgraded abilities and bonuses.
- The Crew: Champions gain stats per Crew member; achieving multiple 3-star Crew units triggers a starship attack.
- Supreme Cells: The highest-damage Cell becomes a Supreme Cell, gaining bonus damage and executing low-health targets.
- Stance Master: A 5-cost Lee Sin can adopt one of three stances (Duelist, Executioner, or Juggernaut), each with a unique ability.
- Monster Trainer: Lulu summons one of three monsters (Kog’Maw, Rammus, Smolder) to the battlefield with unique effects.
Prismatic traits return with a modified mechanic: players must reach the highest breakpoint of a trait and complete a mini-quest to unlock powerful effects. These quests include conditions like spending large amounts of mana or collecting specific augments.
New Mechanic: Power Ups
The primary new gameplay mechanic is “Power Ups.” Players can use an item called Power Snax to open an armory of upgrades for a chosen champion. Power Ups can later be removed and transferred to another unit. This system is intended to provide flexibility and allow players to elevate underperforming or underutilized units into stronger roles.
Augments and Role Reworks
K.O. Coliseum adds approximately 120 new augments, 70 of which introduce new mechanics. Notable examples include:
- Tournament Favorites: Offers loot when winning fights with Soul Fighter units.
- Tiny Team: Makes vertical Star Guardian compositions viable with fewer units.
- Diamond Hands: Interacts directly with the high-risk Crystal Gambit mechanic.
Unit roles have also been revised to create clearer distinctions and balance. For example, Tanks will now gain 5 mana per attack and also generate mana when taking damage. This aims to prevent edge cases such as splash damage unintentionally granting mana to enemy carries. These changes are designed to improve clarity and balance without significantly altering existing strategies.
Cosmetics and Personalization
K.O. Coliseum introduces new cosmetic content including Chibi Spirit Blossom Lillia, Prestige Chibi Spirit Blossom Ahri, High Noon Thresh Unbound, and a new arena called The Veiled Village.
The update also expands Portal Skins, featuring anime-themed environments such as Spirit Springs, God Weapon, and Crystal Caress. Players can continue to personalize their experience by customizing Arenas, Booms, Tacticians, and Portals, a system introduced in Set 14.
Competitive Changes and TFT Pro Circuit
Set 15 marks a significant shift in TFT’s competitive structure with the introduction of the TFT Pro Circuit (TPC), a Tier 1 tournament system launching in August across four global regions. The TPC will feature three major events during the K.O. Coliseum set, beginning on August 29. A total of 32 top players who qualify through Teamfight Tactics: Cyber City will compete in the debut tournament.
The TFT Open (TPO) is also expanding. This year’s event will take place at Porte de Versailles in Paris, accommodating 768 player slots. That’s a 50% increase from previous editions. Pre-sales begin September 8, with additional details on pricing to be released on August 20.
The TPO will include community-focused features such as an Artist Alley, developer panels, co-streamer meet-and-greets, and side events. A 4v4 team event will also be introduced on Day 2 for players eliminated during the first phase of the competition.
Quote from Michael Sloan, Lead Set Designer:
“K.O. Coliseum is a love letter to the anime fighting tournament genre, uniting many classic tropes into a big, bold set packed with spectacle and potential. With the new Power Up mechanic, we’re offering players an exciting opportunity to skip the multi-episode training arc and empower their champions with more power, utility, and novelty earlier in the game. It’s a flashy, action-packed experience with something that every anime fan can enjoy.”
Quote from Michael Sherman, Director of TFT and 2XKO Esports:
“With the debut of the TFT Pro Circuit, our revamped Regional Finals, and our new experimental tournament system, the launch of K.O. Coliseum represents the most transformative moment in competitive TFT history. This next chapter brings even greater opportunities for players to shine on the competitive stage, especially with the high-stakes backdrop of Whisker’s ultimate anime fighting tournament. We’re also eagerly anticipating the Paris Open—our biggest event of the year—where we’ll celebrate the remarkable skill and passion of our global TFT community.”
A cinematic video featuring “Fighter!!” by ASCA was also recently revealed for the new set:
