The Black Lagoon Manga Returns This July

After almost a year without an update, the Black Lagoon manga is returning next month! Monthly Sunday Gene-X announced on their website that the upcoming issue will include the highly anticipated 120th chapter of Rei Hiroe’s noir series. The new issue is scheduled to ship on July 18.

Black Lagoon Deets

Shogakukan’s Monthly Sunday Gene-X has serialized the manga since April 2002. Despite its 20+ year publication, the manga only has 15 volumes under its belt due to prolonged hiatuses caused by Hiroe-sensei’s depression. The manga has undergone three prolonged hiatuses, stretching from May 19, 2010, to January 19, 2013, then from January 18, 2014, to May 19, 2017, and from August 18, 2018, to September 19, 2019. Viz Media publishes the manga in English on their digital manga service.

The manga boasts two TV anime seasons by Madhouse and a five-episode OVA. The franchise has two spin-off light novels written by Gen Urobuchi: Black Lagoon: Sheitane Birdy and Black Lagoon 2: Ballad of the Sinful Wizard. Two spin-off mangas are available — Black Lagoon: Sawyer the Cleaner – Dismemberment! Gore Gore Girl! illustrated by Tatsuhiko Ida, and Black Lagoon Eda: Initial Stage by illustrated Hajime Yamamura.

What’s It About?

Rokuro ‘Rock’ Okajima was a quintessential Japanese businessman with a life devoid of excitement. Focusing solely on climbing the corporate ladder, Rock was oblivious to the world around him. But when Rock gets kidnapped by pirates after a Thai business deal sours, Rock’s former life crumbles away. Instead of panicking, he gives up his corporate life and joins his captors.

Quickly settling into Roanapur’s criminal underground, he becomes just another criminal in the lawless South China Sea. The anime is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix (region-dependent) in its original Japanese and English dubbed version.
